Chapter 20
The snow was really coming down when they left the main building that night, but by morning, the sun blazed in the clear sky, making the world look magical and pristine. They were just finishing up their breakfasts when Lorne appeared like an excited puppy.
âNearly ready to go? Itâs going to be an awesome day!â he announced happily.
Willa had never been in a helicopter before. Her first impression was that it was noisy, and the view was unbelievable. When the pilot took them over the crest of a mountain and immediately dropped their altitude, Willaâs stomach dipped. It felt as if she were in a falling elevator. âWhoa!â she laughed. She grabbed Jacksonâs arm, and he looked at her with amusement.
âYouâll get used to it,â Lorne said cheerfully. âStefan is an amazing pilot, but he loves to show off a little for the guests.â
Willa thought she could do with a little less of a show.
Soon Stefan dropped them off at the top of a mountain that was so white and perfect, it looked like heaven. There was an open bowl for them to ski down above the tree line.
âWeâll start with this and see how you all navigate the powder,â said Lorne as they exited the helicopter and stepped into their ski bindings. âItâs deep here, but there arenât any obstacles to get in the way. Itâs the best place to warm up, in my opinion.â
He spaced them out evenly so they could ski down almost side-by-side. Then he pointed to an area way below them and explained, âStefan will meet us there with the chopper.â
The hours that followed were some of the most exhilarating of Willaâs life. They were waist-deep in fluffy powder and, except for them, the world felt completely silent. She and the three men slalomed their way down mountain after mountain, whooping and laughing with complete abandon. Feathery snow flew around them as they glided through it, covering their bodies with white.
Each wore a tracking device just in case of avalanche, and they all respected the possibility of danger, but they were having so much fun, it was impossible to worry.
At first, they skied conservatively, getting the feel of navigating through such deep snow, but as they grew accustomed to it, they sped up. Willa seemed to be the speed demon of the bunch and routinely left the others a few paces behind. Lorne had to make sure she knew where she was going so she didnât get too far out in front and wind up lost.
After three glorious hours, they headed back to the lodge for lunch.
âOur Willaâs a monster on skis!â exclaimed Casey when they sat down to lunch. âSheâs bruising my ego,â he laughed.
âShow me where it hurts, and Iâll kiss it,â she said with a cheeky grin.
Jackson piped up with a snort, âYour ego needed a little adjustment, if you ask me.â Then he gave Casey a blinding smile that told him clearly that he was only kidding. âOur Willa is pretty amazing, but we knew that already.
